Copies vs attention

Here’s the music industry’s problem as I see it:

Spotify has my attention, and anyone on Spotify can have my attention with no additional cost to me. The amount of money they make it is related to how much of my attention they have (how many streams I listen to).

On iTunes they have to convince me to spend money again, on Spotify they don’t. On iTunes it’s black and white - they win big and move a unit or they luck out and get nothing.

On Spotify they have to convince me again and again, each time they want to keep earning. It’s shades of grey, marketing can get my attention but the music has to keep it, otherwise it’s not worth it.

Basically a subscription service like Spotify, Rdio or MOG is reliant on behaviour, not just single decisions. Life is much harder when you have to influence behaviour, not just decisions.
