I too long for a post-browser internet, but I feel Joe Pemberton may have missed the mark.

I agree we can expect use of the internet to move beyond our desktops and laptops, he couldn’t of picked worse examples of its potential.

Itunes is bloated at best, an application destined to funnel as much activity as possible through Apple’s control. AIR is Adobe’s attempt to push the success of the Flash plugin beyond the desktop. Not Flash’s success mind you, just the plugin. I consider one of Flash’s few successes is to have delayed development of open media playback APIs for browsers.

We should certainly be expecting more tailored flexible experiences than are currently provided by the text/image/link paradigm of the internet but I hope it’s not in the directions Adobe and Apple are taking us.
