Facebook is not Twitter
Alex Iskold is right, it is not a good decision for Facebook to compete with Twitter directly.
If they persist they risk ending up in a Similar hole to RIM where they neglected their core business (keyboards, email) to chase the iPhone. In doing so they proved they were a long way from being competitive in that space.

Japan is cool, Australia is boring.
I am ashamed.
Marblecake also the game
It appears that 4Chan’s founder has come out as ‘The World’s Most Influential Person’, at least according to TIME.
Reading an account of how the hack was supposedly carried out is something to behold. Certainly makes shit-scared of putting any form of code out in the interwebs.

Eurotrash
European parliament votes to extend copyrights for master recordings! And that sucks.
As the article suggests this seems to benefit labels over artists, encourage the flogging of back-catalogue rather than the creation of new music.
I’m fairly sure that’s not what copyright is supposed to do.
Well commented code
This is pretty funny. There sure are a lot of people pissed off at Adobe these days, myself included.
At best they’re setting themselves as permanent punchline to design jokes. At worst they’re on their way up to being picked off the same way Adobe picked off Quark.

Sounding good.
Fix the app store
I completely sympathise with Garrett Murray. It is frustrating (and markedly different from the desktop experience) when Apple’s App Store continues to get in the way of developers who want to give users a better experience.

Rooted tables
Tal Leming weighs in on the Web Fonts discussion that has been happening of late.
I agree type designers deserve to get paid for their work and Tal makes a lot of sense, but I still have some reservations:
Root tables sound promising, but if the domain is decided at the point of purchase it means you’re reliant on the foundry if you change your domain. It’s difficult because like...

Study finds pirates 10 times more likely to buy music
Maybe pirates are people who wanted to buy online but thought record companies did a terrible job on the experience… *cough* DRM *cough*.
The Doctor will tweet you now
Came across Jay Parkinson a while back, since he’s expanded to Hello Health and working with Myca building internet platforms for delivering healthcare.
This is certainly a field where technology for technology’s sake can do more harm than good, but I think Jay’s definitely right it’s time they moved beyond hand-written notes.

A river of jpgs
Just trying out Image Spark (via swissmiss). Seems to be an ever increasing proliferation of image bookmarking sites. From the gold standard FFFFOUND, to the more minimal but still inspiring Dropular and the so far underwhelming vi.sualis.us.
I don’t know if they’re the next Twitter but they certainly hep fill in the time I’m not spending on Facebook anymore.
The final question...
After a life of constant binging...
I think I might need to try The Constant Purge. It would certainly make my next move easier.
Comic Fan
Khoi Vinh has linked to an interesting article about Comic Sans , possibly the most hated typeface on the planet (sorry Arial).
Quite frankly I don’t know how Mr Connare keeps going - I think if I was in his position the abuse would have got to me long ago.
No meat? I'll make lamb then...
Is Eating Less Meat Better than Eating No Meat?
Yes. There is nothing inherently wrong with eating animals. It’s a well established practice throughout nature that humans aren’t managing very well at the moment. That doesn’t mean we should give up on it completely.
Survey design
Just did a survey for Dopplr and I noticed one element of the design that was quite smart. The usual questions you get with the survey like “are you male or female” or “how old are you” were at the end of the survey rather than the beginning.
It’s a smart move to do this if you’re not screening participants. I know I felt a feeling of relief when I was 80%...
